Can't open 4.duk error

currently running windows vista.. have my video card drivers up to date and color depth is set to 32-bit.
i used the english installer. it asked me to locate the cd/dvd drive with the game. i pointed it to the proper drive and it said it would be a few minutes. a little while later it finished although the cd drive never spun or read once. i then tried running the game from the start menu and am greeted with the following:
"We're sorry, you've encountered an internal game error. Please restart your game and restore a saved game. If you have continued problems, please report the following information to Sierra Technical Support:
Can't open 4.duk
Script # 62999 ($fc76d114+)"
anyone experience this, or have any ideas?
